Electronic Arts has over twenty teams under its umbrella and in a new press release, they welcomed their latest addition. Ridgeline Games, led by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto and composed of industry veterans, is joining EA to develop a narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe.

It is a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the charge on expanding the narrative, storytelling and character development opportunities in the Battlefield series.”

Marcus Lehto, Game Director and Head of Ridgeline Games

EA’s premiere first-person shooter series has received a lot of criticism following the release of Battlefield 2042, a game that notably didn’t have a single player campaign in favor of a more robust multiplayer mode that has been lacking in new content since launch. While the current teams are working to update maps and classes for 2042, there has been confirmation that the next game in the series will have the bombastic campaigns that the previous games were known for.

In a blog post over on the EA site, Byron Beede provided an update on the future of the series as it approaches its 20th anniversary. He details that Ridgeline Games will be working on a Battlefield narrative while DICE focuses on multiplayer specifically and Ripple Effect creates a new Battlefield experience that we don’t know much else about.

With Marcus and his team at Ridgeline Games joining the world-class global team we have already in place, Battlefield is in the strongest position to succeed.”

Vince Zampella, Founder of Respawn Entertainment and Head of the Battlefield franchise.

One last thing of note from that blog post is that Creative Director Lars Gustavsson, who has been with the series since the beginning, is leaving DICE after over 20 years. Along with Vince Zampella, Rebecka Coutaz at DICE, Christian Grass at Ripple Effect Studios, and Alex Seropian at Industrial Toys will make up the new Battlefield leadership team.

We reviewed Battlefield 2042 last year after release and said that the game would have made a really solid first-person shooter if it was released in 2022 but in 2021, it was unfinished and full of quirks that couldn’t be overlooked.
