Marvel and Skydance Team Up for Untitled Black Panther and Captain America Game

Today was the very first Disney & Marvel Games Showcase where we got a look at a few of the games coming out under the massive Disney umbrella. The roughly twenty-minute event was fast-paced and didn’t spend too much time on any one game. You can watch it below or keep reading for the highlights.

We got a few new announcements in the showcase like the co-op platformer Disney’s Illusion Island coming to Nintendo Switch, and the MarioKart-like Disney Speedstorm, but not a lot of information was revealed about most of the games shown. Tron: Identity from Bithell Games, for example, got a short animation with a title card and a vague 2023 release window.

As for previously announced games, we saw a snippet of gameplay from Aliens: Dark Decent and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, releasing December 2, will be getting a series of animated shorts to set up the game’s plot that will be premiering on Marvel’s YouTube channel starting October 31.

Disney is also going all-in on mobile games, from Marvel Snap, a superpowered card game coming to iOS and Android on October 18, to Avatar: Reckoning, an MMORPG shooter coming soon to mobile devices. But of course, the biggest mobile game announcement was Marvel’s World of Heroes, a Pokemon GO-style game from Niantic, the developers of Pokemon GO. The game is expected to release sometime next year.

Then there was the big world premiere teaser, news of which was leaked yesterday. Skydance New Media and Marvel are teaming up to make a game starring Black Panther and Captain America. The game is set in World War II and presumably follows the two heroes along with a soldier and a spy. This is the game from Amy Hennig that was announced last year and, while there’s still no title, the teaser did have easter eggs and clues for Marvel fans to piece together.

UPDATE: We have an official description of Amy Hennig’s narrative-driven ensemble adventure game. This original story will follow a young Steve Rogers and Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather, along with Gabriel Jones, a US soldier and member of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali, leader of the Wakandan Spy Network.

All in all, this was a rather odd showcase. It was short, but with how little information was given about each title revealed, it might have been better to push this showcase back a few months so the developers had more to show. Especially considering that highly-anticipated titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games and Star Wars: Eclipse only appeared in the ending promo video.

So there you have it. That was the first Disney & Marvel Games Showcase. Let us know what you thought of it down in the comments below. And shoutout to Blessing Adeoye Jr from Kinda Funny for hosting the big leagues.
