The Office Type Creative Director on the Journey from Kickstarter to Steam

The Office Type is a new visual novel dating-sim about a summer sales intern who finds a magical cupcake in the break room and soon begins to see anthropomorphic office supplies. Developed by indie studio Heavy Thought Studios, the game was crowdfunded back in 2018 and has been in development for the past seven years.

The game has 24 total characters, each with 30 dates, and every character has a romantic, intimate, or platonic story route that you can choose at the end of Date 1. I played The Office Type for a few hours and found it to be an amusing time. Apart from the visual novel, there is also a match-3 mechanic in the game to determine how you build your relationship with the stationery items that come to life.

We recently got the chance to chat with Jack Guffey, the Creative Director of The Office Type, about developing a visual novel in 2025 and the long journey from Kickstarter to Steam. Check out the full hour-long discussion on YouTube. And for more dating sims and visual novels, click here to read our interview with the Lead Designer of Date Everything.
