New Nintendo Switch Revealed and Releasing This October
The Nintendo Switch family is growing. After months of industry insiders claiming that the Switch Pro was on the horizon and Nintendo flat out denying its existence, we finally have confirmation of the next-gen (sorta) Nintendo Switch console: the Nintendo Switch (OLED model).
This updated version of Nintendo’s popular handheld will have a 7-inch OLED screen and better build quality. The console features a wider, and consequently more sturdy, adjustable back stand. There will also be 64 GB internal storage, allowing you to download multiple games without needing an external microSD card. The new Nintendo Switch also has enhanced onboard audio and the new slightly redesigned dock has a built-in LAN port.
The new Nintendo Switch will join the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite on store shelves on the 8th of October alongside Metroid Dread. This announcement was made now so that in the coming weeks and months, as we get more details on upcoming games, developers can showcase some of their titles running on the new console. However, players hoping to get increased FPS or better overall performance should know that the new system has the same internals as the original Nintendo Switch.
The official Nintendo page for the console lists the system price at $349.99, which puts it higher than the $299 price of the original Switch, meaning the base Switch will now be the new mid-ranged console with the $199 Switch Lite being the lowest entry point. Keep in mind that due to part shortages, the new Nintendo Switch will likely be in the same position as the PlayStation 5 so don’t expect to simply walk into the electronics store and see a few of them laying around. At least not until next year. On a related note, early reports suggest that Valve is also working on a handheld console to play Steam games, but much like the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) was up until a few minutes ago, it’s just a rumor.
