Following a bunch of teased announcements, the 12th mainline installment to the Mortal Kombat franchise has been officially revealed today with a release date set for September. A cinematic trailer announcing the reboot of the beloved fighting game franchise was released earlier today and showcases plenty of what is expected in a Mortal Kombat trailer in the way of over-the-top gory fights and fatalities, but we also get a general idea of what the plot to this game will be.

In terms of characters that have been confirmed by NetherRealm Studios, we have Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung (currently a pre-order bonus), and Johnny Cage, but more will surely be announced closer to the game’s release.

We have additional info about the game from the official FAQ page. Mortal Kombat 1 will have rollback netcode for more accurate multiplayer fights though in light of recent releases, they do make a point to say that you do not need to always be online to play the game. The game will also assist characters during matches.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, May 19, and there will be a pre-order exclusive beta sometime in August. Mortal Kombat 1 will be launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 19. QLOC is developing the Steam and Epic Games Store versions of the game. Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive are developing the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Though they do emphasize that all versions of Mortal Kombat 1 are built on NetherRealm Studios technology with oversight by NetherRealm. You can watch the announcement trailer down below.
