Every Crewmate in Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew

Share

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew from MiMiMi Games is out tomorrow and as you get ready to set sail on the sentient Red Marley as Afia Manicato, you are tasked with reviving all the long-dead crewmates that once worked on the ship. To make your voyage easier, here is a quick guide to every crewmate (and their abilities) in the game.

Toya of Iga | The Ship’s Cook | He prepares tasty, soul-infused meals for the crew. Toya is a master in the arts of battle and cooking, always eager to challenge himself both on the field and in the kitchen. He also makes a mean octopus carpaccio.

  • Katashiro: Can leave behind a small, humanoid paper charm called Katashiro that only he can see.
  • Shadow Step: Teleports back to the Katashiro from any distance. Toya will attack any marked enemy by the Katashiro.
  • Bird’s Voice: Uses a whistle to draw the attention of nearby enemies and make them come to his location.

Suleidy | The Ship Doctor | She takes care of the Marley’s skeleton crew and makes cures for nasty soul sicknesses. She’s also deadly with a blade. The soul-infused plants Suleidy grows in her sickbay help her research the mysteries of the Curse.

  • Cover Seeds: Suleidy can throw a vial to grow a very handy bush somewhere in her vicinity. Perfect for hiding in an open space!
  • Wander Dust: This foul odor will daze the hardiest Inquisition soldier. The strange spores make enemies walk away from her in a straight line.

Gaëlle Le Bris | The Cannoness | Whatever weapons and cannons need tending to on the Marley, Gaëlle is here to fix, fire, and maintain them. She also writes poems on the side and reads them to those who are willing to listen.

  • Fire Kanol: Her kanol (which is Breton for “cannon”) can shoot any (un)willing person as far as the eye can see, knocking them, and whoever she’s aiming at, out cold.
  • Kanol Recall: Her kanol comes equipped with a similarly magical rope that can lasso friendly crewmates into the kanol before they know what’s happening.
  • Firecracker: These self-made firecrackers make a hell of a noise and attract the attention of anyone close by. They are also pretty to see at night.

John Mercury | The Shipwright | You can always see John scurrying around, hammering some ghost nails back in place or scrubbing the deck, or chatting with his pet fish Sir Reginald. No one really knows what he’s on about with the “turtles,” though.

  • Anchor Down: John is able to use his anchor to open a portal to the Below where he can hide forever if needed.
  • Anchor Up: He can also return through another portal and use the force of his entry to jolt the anchor up in the air and whack an enemy dead with it.
  • Sir Reginald: Sir Reginald enjoys popping out of the Below to take a look around. Most people are quite surprised when they see him.

Pinkus von Presswald | The Quartermaster | He keeps the Marley’s books and oversees rations and supplies. Besides that, Pinkus usually cherishes a good smoke while he misappropriates the aforementioned books as his personal memoirs.

  • Peruse Mind: Can force his soul into the mind of an enemy and take over their body. After that experience, most need a moment to recover.
  • Coin: Maybe if Pinkus didn’t throw his coins around to attract the eyes of the masses, the bankruptcy of the von Presswald estate could have been avoided.

Quentin Aalbers | The Treasure Hunter | Doesn’t like to share his treasures which makes his role on the Marley a bit peculiar. Lucky for Quentin, peculiar fits right in with the rest of the bunch. Don’t touch his chest if you value your fingers.

  • Treasure Rod: A multi-use rod that can pull friendlies out of the fray, draw Inquisition corpses into Quentin’s chest, and even sometimes allows you to trigger levers and similar things from afar.
  • The Golden Head: Quentin takes off his golden head and throws it on the floor. Inexperienced members of the Inquisition are usually lured by its shininess – only to be stabbed in the back moments after picking it up.

Teresa La Ciega | The Sharpshooter | She lives in a crow’s nest, casting her burned eyes toward the horizon. Teresa’s sight can spy ships through stormy weather and find the smallest details in a crime scene. Her shots never miss.

  • Iron Judgement: Can shoot two kinds of Soul Energy arrows over a large distance, delivering either lethal or just temporary judgment.
  • Ashen Judgement: By shooting an arrow coated in ash, you can briefly blind enemies.

Minor Spoiler | Another One | While I won’t say who it is, there is one more playable crewmate who you can unlock after beating the game. This is a character you should be familiar with by the end and I won’t say any more than that so you can enjoy the surprise.

And there you have it. A list of every crewmate you can revive and play as in Shadow Gambit. The characters really help change up the gameplay style and swapping between them between missions is essential to keep the gameplay loop fresh. If you picked up the game for yourself, let me know in the comments what you think of it so far. And be sure to check out our other Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew coverage like my upcoming review.
