Starsand Island Technical Director on NPC Affection System and Heart Stories

Comments Off on Starsand Island Technical Director on NPC Affection System and Heart Stories

In the ever-growing field of life sim, new games must have some unique spin on the genre to make a mark. Starsand Island, the upcoming game from developer Seed Lab that was crowdfunded via Kickstarter earlier this year, is focusing on the friendship and romance system in order to give players meaningful connections with NPCs. They recently showcased their NPC Affection System in a new trailer, and we got the chance to interview Golton Gao, Technical Director at Seed Lab, about how it works and why it’s an important part of the game’s identity. Here’s what they had to say!

The farming sim market is very saturated following the success of games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. What sets Starsand Island apart from its contemporaries?

Gao: That’s a good question! In our mind, Starsand Island stands apart from its contemporaries in three significant ways.

Firstly is its aesthetic. Starsand Island has a high-quality, soothing, anime-inspired art style that combines visual charm with emotional resonance.

Secondly, there is the cozy vibe of the game. Players will be able to create and enjoy their ideal pastoral life on our meticulously crafted island!

Thirdly is the game’s rich DIY construction system, which seamlessly blends grid-based construction with modular block-based building reminiscent of The Sims.

You recently showcased the game’s friendship and romance mechanics, including an NPC memory system. How does this system work in practice? Can you share an example of how an NPC might react differently to a player based on past interactions?

Our NPC memory system allows each character to remember their moments with you. For instance, if you often help an NPC with tasks or give them their favorite gifts, they’ll not only chat with you more eagerly but might also be the first to lend a hand when you’re in a pinch.

What were some of the biggest challenges in designing NPCs who have memory, emotions, and independent goals without making the system feel overwhelming or robotic?

Gao: To address these concerns, we implemented the following mechanisms:
• Interconnected Relationship System: NPCs don’t exist in isolation. Each character has their own social circle, forming bonds through shared interests, past experiences, or even island gossip. This web of relationships makes the island’s community feel alive; NPCs don’t just react mechanically but behave like part of a living ecosystem.
• Unique Story Arcs: Every NPC has their own personal growth path and key story moments. Your choices will shape these events, affecting not just the NPC but the entire island’s dynamics.
• Points-of-Interest Guided Daily Routines: The island is dotted with points of interest like the ranch, general store, and beach. NPCs autonomously decide their activities based on personality, mood, and current goals. A bookworm might spend hours at the bookstore, while an outdoorsy type could invite you for a seaside bike ride. This dynamic behavior ensures no two days are the same, offering fresh interactions and surprises.

How do you balance scripted moments with organic, player-driven bonding? What stops relationships from becoming a “checklist” in the game?

Gao: We steer clear of grinding for affection points, so relationships aren’t just about stacking numbers. Every NPC has their own daily routines and little stories. Spend time with them, pay attention, and you’ll uncover unique bonding moments. Many events branch based on your choices and actions, not rigid requirements. The goal is to savor the journey of connecting with characters, not just chasing outcomes, making it feel like you’re building real bonds, not ticking off tasks.

What are “heart stories,” and how do they differ from the traditional NPC storylines in other farming sims?

Gao: “Heart Stories” are personalized growth arcs we’ve crafted for each NPC. Unlike the conventional “complete tasks → gift items → unlock endings” structure, these Stories focus on the characters’ dreams, regrets, conflicts, and how they grow alongside you.

Key moments aren’t just about “raising friendship levels”; they involve facing life’s challenges together and mutual healing. Each Heart Story offers multiple branching endings, encouraging players to explore freely and create their own unique journeys.

You mention that every NPC relationship has its own story arc, including multiple endings and personalized companionship. Is there an overarching narrative outside of that, or is the goal of Starsand Island to make your memories through the existing game systems?

The game doesn’t follow a single main plot. Instead, we encourage players to piece together their own “life story” through interactions with the island’s residents. Each character’s journey and growth will shape the island’s atmosphere and events.

We believe the most compelling storyline emerges from these authentic, nuanced relationships and choices that let players craft memories that are truly their own.

For the last question, is there a small moment or detail in Starsand Island that most players might miss that you’re proud of creating?

Gao: Absolutely! There are quite a few subtle details woven into the game. For instance, the island’s weather, seasons, and even the NPCs’ outfits and hobbies can subtly influence their daily conversations and activities.

Some NPCs might rescue stray animals on rainy days, while others might leave wish-filled bottles along the shore. Even something as simple as digging up a failed test paper from an NPC early in the game could turn out to be a key item for unlocking one of their storylines.

These details might be easy to overlook, but they’re what make the world feel alive and authentic. We hope every player discovers their own little “easter eggs” along the way.

That’s it for the interview. Thank you to Golton Gao for taking the time to answer our questions. The NPC Affection System in Starsand Island certainly feels ambitious. Meaningful character interactions with NPCs could go a long way in shaping the gameplay experience of a life sim, and I’m curious to see it in action later this year. Starsand Island is currently in development for PC via Steam and is expected to release in Q4 2025. If the game sounds interesting, then click here to wishlist the game and support the developer.
